2019-10-27 Weekly Happenings
Hi Everyone!
I hope that everyone had an amazing weekend! We will be down at the range on Monday and Tuesday this week starting at 6pm.
Just a quick note - The phone number for the range is: 906-487-2996. If we're down there and the door to get to the range is locked for some reason, this is probably the best number you can call.
If you can, please let me know when you plan to show up to the range to shoot your WIRC targets (date/time). This allows me to better coordinate everything, assign firing points and get equipment on the line to cut down setup time.
Since we will not be able to do block time for WIRC Smallbore targets some coordination with times is necessary. Just a briefing on the times ( -> represents a break in time with commands / words given in between):
Air Rifle - 8 (5) minute sight in period -> 25 minutes for 20 shots.
Smallbore is a bit more difficult to get nicely coordinated with people coming in at different times.
- Prone - 3 minute prep -> 20 minutes for 20 shots
- Standing - 12 minute target & equipment change -> 3 minute prep -> 40 minutes for 20 shots
- Kneeling - 12 minute target & equipment change -> 3 minute prep -> 30 minutes for 20 shots
Items this week:
- Homework Assignment (10min) - Please read pages 15 + 16 from this USA Shooting Newsletter. It ties in nicely with what we will be discussing in (hopefully) a week or so.
- Brief overview of match operations & commands.
- We will start shooting WIRC targets for anyone that is ready, or cannot commit to shooting all of them next week.
- If you fall into this category and haven't gone through the entire introduction training program, let me know and we can work something out.
- Don't worry. This isn't the first time and this won't be the last time this has happened.
- If you fall into this category and haven't gone through the entire introduction training program, let me know and we can work something out.
- For everyone that's completed the " Smallbore Rifle - Prone " we will begin "Smallbore Rifle - Kneeling"
- Please read the entry under "Upcoming Items" about ammunition.
- It is highly recommended that you wear pants. If you wear shorts, you're probably gonna have a bad time.
- We will be starting with the basics, and hopefully by the end of the evening you'll be shooting it in full equipment.
- I know there are still a few people who haven't finished the Air RIfle introduction and that's fine. Not everyone advances at the same pace and we can work on it until you get to that point.
- For everyone that's completed the "Proper Introduction to Air RIfle" we will begin Smallbore Rifle - Prone.
- Please read the entry under "Upcoming Items" about ammunition.

- For anyone that hasn't completed the "Proper Introduction to Air Rifle" we will be doing that.
- Not to say that what you've been doing has been improper. I just want to go over it to make sure something wasn't missed.
- We will be working through the technical aspects of the position and some real basic skills.
- I can't stress enough the importance of Air Rifle. In the typical NCAA / NRA Collegiate competition, AirRifle is 50% of the total score; And the Standing Position is 2/3rds of the total score.
- If you are interested in joining and are unsure, come down to the range and try us out! It's never too late to start!
Upcoming Items:
- Next week we will begin shooting our first set of WIRC targets! Unless you can allocate being at the range for 4 hours, you will probably need to show up to the range twice to shoot the entire match.
- For Smallbore you will need to either bring your own .22LR ammunition, or you can purchase it from the team. We sell Federal 711b: 50 rounds for $2.50, and 500 rounds for $22.
- A note on ammunition if you do choose to bring your own: Please make sure that what you are bringing is a plain lead bullet (It does not have any type of jacketing), and check with me or a team range officer before using it in the team's rifles. Our rifles are manufactured for precision competition, and are designed quite differently from your standard plinking rifle. The wrong ammunition through them can quickly strip out the rifling, resulting in a very expensive trip back to Germany for repair.
- Because we purchase the ammunition we sell through special programs at extreme discounts; Any ammunition you purchased through the team must be stored in team storage and used exclusively for team related practice & competition.
- Failure to comply with this puts the club at risk of being disqualified from future discount purchase programs.
- At the moment this ammunition retails for about $35 per 500 rounds.
- Our first travel opportunity will be the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan Rifle Team in Jackson, MI. Dates haven't been announced yet but it will either be last November, or the beginning of December
