Rifle Team Weekly Happenings 2021-10-10

Hi Everyone!

I want to wish everyone a belated 10.9 day!  I also hope that everyone enjoyed the weather this weekend.  By October standards it was really nice.

For those of you who don't know what 10.9 day is.   It's a day celebrated by many Olympic style shooters and clubs (such as ours).  Simply put, a shot value of 10.9 is the highest possible value on the target when using decimal scoring.   Being able to consistently shoot a 10.9 is the goal in our sport and considered by many to be the mark of perfection.   The purpose of 10.9 day is to recognize the pursuit of and achievement of that excellence, not just on the range putting holes in some paper, but also striving for and achieving excellence in our daily lives as well.  10.9 day is usually celebrated on October 9th, but it's not just limited to this day or even shooting.  The overall purpose is to encourage everyone to "shoot for excellence in everything that you do" all the time.

Items this week:

  • We'll be at the SDC Rifle Range this Tuesday from 6-10PM.

  • This week we will be covering beginning Smallbore - Kneeling and Smallbore - Standing for anyone that's gone through the Smallbore - Prone basics.  We will be working through the basic, and maybe a few of the more technical aspects of the position.  I'd also like to just get everyone in all the equipment so they can get a feel for it.
    • Please be sure to wear long pants for the kneeling position.  If you insist on wearing shorts, please bring a pair of pants anyways.  Your knees will thank you.
    • Due to time constraints this will be extremely abridged and will give you the minimal skills necessary to shoot Prone in a competition.  We'll backfill basic skills after our first competition in November.
      • Try to allocate 90 minutes (or more) for practice this week - It's alright if you can't make that commitment.  Just let me know and we'll figure something out.
      • You will need to purchase or provide your own ammunition to shoot Smallbore.  The team sells F711B -  50 rounds for $3, or 500 rounds for $23

  • In an attempt to consolidate new team member instruction into a more focused and productive and less hectic affair, we'll have more of a group-style introduction starting at times specified below.  If you have any time constraints please email me; I'll try to work around them.  If possible, please try to show up about 10 minutes early so we can get you registered in the membership system and handle any type of financial transitions (if necessary), or leave yourself about 10 minutes after practice to get this handled.
    • If all goes planned we will start group-style instruction at the following times: 6:10 (Standing Start); 6:45 (Standing Start); 7:15 (Kneeling Start); 7:45 (Kneeling Start); 8:15 (Standing Start)
    • Instruction Format (Times specified in minutes)
      • 10 - Anschutz 1913 Setup (Standing)
      • 15 - Standing Overview
      • 10 - First Shots / Feel the similarity and differences to Air Rifle
      • 30 - Standing Practice
      • 10 - Anschutz 1913 Setup (Kneeling)
      • 10 - Kneeling Basics
      • 10 - First Shots (Supported)
      • 10 - Kneeling Overview
      • 20 - Kneeling Practice

  • If you are interested in joining and are unsure, come down to the range and try us out!  It's never too late to start!

  • Homework - Learn the rules
    • Like all sports it's important to know the rules of the game.  Both so that you don't get penalized for breaking the rules, and recognizing situations where another competitor or team has an advantage because they are breaking the rules.  Along with when and how to call them out.
    • Your homework is to familiarize yourselves with these rulebooks.  You don't need to know them inside and out - yet; Just a few pages here and there.
    • Since we'll be starting two new positions, reading up on the rules for Kneeling & Standing would be a good place to start.
      • NCAA/USAS Page 41/42 / Rule 7.6.1.1, 7.6.1.3
      • NRA SB Rules Page 14 / 5.10, 5.12)

    • You can find the rulebooks here:

Upcoming Items:

  • Next week we will start shooting our first postal competition.  Please see the email regarding that for how it will work out.

  • For anyone that has the time we will use next week for review of competition and they will shoot the entire competition on the 26th.
    • Alternative catchup practice / instruction can be scheduled at an off-campus location.

  • We will have a few travel opportunities coming up in November & December.  More details will be released when I finalize some plans with the other coaches.

Thank you for your attention, and have a great week!

GO HUSKIES!
- Zach
