Rifle Team Weekly Happenings 2022-10-16

Hi Everyone!

I hope that everyone has had a great week. With the temperatures getting colder it's time to start finding winter activities. Don't like the cold and looking for something to do 1-2 evenings per week? Why not come down to the SDC Rifle Range? Now featuring Heat™.

Range Time This Week:

  • Monday 6pm - 10pm
  • Tuesday 6pm - 10pm

What we will be working on this week:

  • This week we will begin shooting our first set of Match Targets. This week we will shoot Air Rifle and Next Week will be Smallbore (And Air RIfle if you haven't shot those).
    • If we don't have enough air, we will do Smallbore this week and (hopefully) Air RIfle next week. I won't know if we will have enough air until Monday at 6pm.... So I guess be prepared to shoot either.
    • I realize that some of you probably don't feel you're to the point where you feel comfortable competing. I respect that but I really encourage everyone that can to participate. This is a multi-month competition. If you miss one month you're disqualified from awards for the entire competition. You can still compete the other months, but you won't be eligible for any awards.
      • You only have 5 years of collegiate eligibility. Don't waste an entire year just because for just one month you felt like you weren't good enough. Just try your best. That's all you can ask from yourself. You'll get better as the season progresses!
    • Air Rifle targets will take around 1.5-2 hours to complete (Including equipment setup & tear down), so please plan ahead. If you arrive after 7:30, you may not have enough time to shoot the entire match.
    • The WIRC targets are shot under NRA rules. Unfortunately, the NRA doesn't believe in "Block Time", so I can't give you a chunk of time and say "go". So below is what will happen for Air Rifle. Because stage 1 has different times than stages 2 + 3, and everyone will be starting at different times the actual timing of things will be a bit goofy. A full detail of times can be found at the bottom of this message :
      • Gather Equipment and get setup.
      • Shooters to the line called (Stage 1)
        • 3 Minutes - Preparation Period
        • 8 Minutes - Sight-in period starts.
        • 25 Minutes - 20 record shots (no additional sighting shots allowed)
      • Target change +Break
        • 3 Minute Target Change
        • 5 Minute Break
      • Shooters to the line called (Stage 2)
        • 1 Minutes - Preparation Period
        • 5 Minutes - Sight-in period.
      • 25 Minutes - 20 record shots (no additional sighting shots allowed)
      • Target change
        • 3 Minute Target Change
        • 5 Minute Break
      • Shooters to the line called (Stage 3)
        • 1 Minutes - Preparation Period
        • 5 Minutes - Sight-in period.
      • 25 Minutes - 20 record shots (no additional sighting shots allowed)

WIRC Air RIfle Time List

    • Since most of you haven't learned how to zero the rifle yet (or have the stability for it in standing), we'll go over it at the range and just do the best we can.
    • Since we are shooting a competition, things will work a bit different from practice.... Even if you are just there practicing.
      • You will be given a firing point assignment. This is so that you can set up equipment without disturbing others.
      • Conversations inside the range while shooting is happening should be kept to a minimum.
      • When you're finished with your targets they will remain downrange until the command to change targets has been given.
    • Unless the outer office door is fully shut and latched with the office acting as an airlock, Entry/Exit from the range will only be allowed when firing is not happening.
      • Do not let the doors slam! Assist them it closing quietly.
    • With the current planning, I anticipate that we will be calling shooters to the line approximately 6:15, 6:54, 7:33, 8:12, 8:51, 9:30
      • Please show up 10-15 minutes early to get your equipment from the hallway and everything set up.
      • If you want to see how I got these goofy times, see the chart at the bottom of this message.
    • If you don't want to shoot the match, or you finish your match targets and there's time left you're more than welcome to continue shooting.
    • If you are interested in joining, come down to the range and try us out! It's never too late to start!

Membership Meeting

  • We will be having an organizational membership meeting on October 19th from 1830-2000.
    • Location is Fisher 126
    • There will be donuts and cider
    • It's important to show up for these meetings. This is where we do things like pass bylaws and approve spending.
    • We have a minimum member attendance requirement (Called a Quorum) that needs to be met in order for us to do anything.
    • A full agenda will be sent out separately.

Homework
  • None - Start of Match Week
  • Just think of a good thought / place you can just think of and come back to.

Upcoming Items:

  • Next week we'll be shooting the small bore portion of our first WIRC targets.
    • For anyone that doesn't know all 3 smallbore positions (Prone, Standing, Kneeling). Please let me know. We can go over it quickly at the range after you shoot Air Rifle, Minutes before the match or after the meeting on Wednesday.
  • Save the date - It looks like we will be going to Jackson, MI on the weekend of December 3rd to compete against the University of Michigan. More details will be released next month. (Departing Friday AM, Returning Sunday PM)
  • We will be holding (what I hope will be) a fun competition-adjacent event on October 31st.
    • It will be different from almost every other competition we will shoot.
    • I don't want to reveal too many details and spoil the event and prizes....
      • If you're not comfortable walking into something blind, let me know and I'll let you know what's going on.

Thank you for your attention, and have a great week!

GO HUSKIES!
- Zach
