Upcoming Event: The Competition Rifle Team Halloween Special

 Hi Everyone!

First, sorry for the late send out on this.  My trip to the "Queen of American Watering Places" has had a lot less "Email writing time" than planned.

Anyways, Seeing as Tomorrow (Monday) is Halloween and we also have range hours that day we will be throwing a special event.  This is open to any student with an active membership.  (Don't have one?  A membership for the rest of the semester is currently just $10).  You will also need to provide your own smallbore ammunition, air rifle pellets will be provided.

This event will be a multi-position and multi-discipline event starting around 6:30-6:45 and will run until around 9:30.  It will be a "walk through" style event, meaning that you move from station to station, and complete whatever activity is present.  If there is a shooting position that you haven't done yet, not a problem.  Just let me know and I can quickly show you or we can figure something else out.

If you have a costume, feel free to wear As long as it does not impede the safe handling and operation of a rifle.

Synopsis:

Each year, the Giant Orange Pumpkin visits the Rifle Range that it believes is the most untended and umm... presents a series of challenges and then .... *checks notes* ...   Leaves awards to be handed out at the next membership meeting or something(?)  Given the poor state of our range ....     I think he's just gotta pick this ours.

Good Gravy!  The range was renovated in 2019 and it's already falling apart.  Could we start fining the people and groups who are shooting up our range and start repairing the damage they've caused?

Events:

Stage 0     "Registration"

  • Before you enter the range, there will be a bowl of candy.  I don't want it going home with me, so take and eat (no food in the range) as much as you'd like.  Again, no food in the range and don't eat anything until after you're done shooting and have washed your hands.
  • After you enter the range Check in at the desk inside the range.  You'll be given targeting and instructions from there.

Stage 1:  "Sitting Around The Pumpkin Patch"

  • Smallbore - Standing
  • Target:  4x4 "See-N-Shoot"
  • Objective:  Score highest value
  • Scoring:  Each bull has a different max value  (0-15).   The value of the shot will be the bull's valute * visible shot value * .1 (e.g.  shot scores 9, bull is worth 8.  Shot is valued at 7.2)
  • # Shots:  10
  • Time Limit:  15 Minutes

Stage 2:  "Fog in the pumpkin patch"

  • Air Rifle - Standing
  • Target:  8 x hanging Small plastic or Wax Pumpkins.   Obscured by "at thick fog".  Hanging wire will be very visible.
  • Objective:  Shoot all the pumpkins.  Do not hit the hanging string.
  • Scoring:  Each pumpkin has a different value.  (Penalty of 5 + pumpkin value for hitting the hanging wire and dropping the pumpkin).
  • # Shots:  8
  • Time Limit:  Unlimited

Stage 3:  "Starting the engine on a doghouse"

  • Air Rifle - Kneeling
  • Target:  Hanging Orange & Green Popsicle Sticks.   (Hopefully they spin when shot)
  • Objective:  Hit sticks without hitting the hanging strings
  • Scoring:  5 Points Per per (Max 20)  (Penalty of 15 for hitting the wire and dropping the popsicle stick)
  • # Shots:  Unlimited
  • Time:  3 Minutes

Stage 4:  Aurora Lights Up The Pumpkin Patch"

  • Smallbore - Prone (75ft)
  • Target:  See-N-Shoot Grid
  • Objective:  Get the highest score.
  • Scoring:  Extended A17 overlay, aligning with 4 points on target.  If the overlay overlaps, the highest value takes it.
  • # Shots:  12
  • Time Limit:  10 Minutes

Stage 5:  "The Giant Pumpkin"

  • Smallbore - Standing
  • Target:  Orange paper Plate
  • Objective:  Shoot the paper plate.  Get the highest score
  • Scoring:  Extended A17 overlay aligned to common spot.
  • # Shots:  10
  • Time:  15 Minutes

Stage 5    "Arts and Crafts"

  • I was planning on pre-assembling the targeting for the last stage, but due to not getting approval for targeting until Friday, I didn't have time to.  Anyways, this is a "My Loss, Your Work" type situation.  You now get to assemble your targeting for Stage 7
  • Using nothing more than popsicle sticks, markers, and an ample amount of hot glue gun you get to assemble and decorate your own inaccurate model of Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen's Fokker DR.I triplane.

Note: There will be an award for best looking and best assembled plane.

Stage 6:  "I'm Gonna Kick That Umm.  Hockey puck?"

  • Wash your hands.
  • Then head into the ice rink and run some stairs, or run a few laps.  Take 5 minutes and get that heart rate up and whatnot.

Stage 7:  Dogfight With Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen

  • Smallbore - Kneeling
  • Target:  The plane you made in stage 5.
  • Objective:  Shoot down the red baron.  Shooting the wire hanging the plane does not count.  Target will need to be re-hung.  Time does not stop.
  • Scoring:  Timed Stage.  0-30sec = 100.   1 point deduction for every second past 30
  • # Shots:  Unlimited
  • Time Limit:  10 minutes

That's it.   You can stay or go.   But if you can, please help stay and clean up.  The ending time is set for around 2130.  This is a big event with lots of equipment and parts so any help putting it all away would be a huge help.

If everyone participating is at the range at the end then we'll have the awards ceremony then.  Otherwise it will be at our next membership meeting.

If this event sounds like the plot to a TV special that AppleTV+ currently has the right to....   Well......       Another name for this event might be    "That's borderline Copyright Infringement bald child wearing a yellow shirt".

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
Zach
