Rifle Team Weekly Happenings 2022-11-06

Hi Everyone!

I hope that everyone has had a great week,  Thanks to everyone who made it out to our event on Halloween.  I hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed planning it.   A huge thanks goes out to Pier who handled the unnecessary and enormous paperwork hassle and getting all the required approvals to make this event possible.

Congratulations to Andrew for winning the event with a score of 15.3.   2nd place was Jack with a score of 11, and 3rd place was Breanna with a score of -58.1.

If you took pictures of this event, please let me know and I'll share the googley drive with you so you can upload them so the team has a copy.  But if you weren't able to make it out below is what you missed out on (As seen through my potato - errr - phone).

Onto Business

Range Time This Week:

  • Monday 6pm - 10pm
  • Tuesday 6pm - 10pm

What we will be working on this week:

  • For most everyone this week we will be working on learning how to adjust butplates & cheek pieces in Smallbore Prone and Air Rifle.  And more in general, just shooting and working on a single position.   Working on building up a position and working on building "muscle memory".
    • If you aren't to this point yet, don't worry.  We'll work on where you left off and try to pull this in if we can.
  • Also this week we will start shooting our November WIRC Targets.  If it seems early, that's because it is.   Most other schools we shoot against don't have the entire week of Thanksgiving off, but we do so we lose a bit there
    • When you arrive at the range let me know if you will be practicing, shooting WIRC Air, or WIRC Smallbore.
    • If you don't want to shoot the match, or you finish your match targets and there's time left you're more than welcome to continue shooting.
  • If you are interested in joining, come down to the range and try us out!  It's never too late to start!

Homework:

It's always good to know the rules for competition.  I'd like you to read the NRA Smallbore Rulebook (Link Here).  Using the index I want you to find the answer to the following questions, and the rule it's specified in.

  • True / False:  You will always be permitted to return to the sighting area during a Smallbore competition.
  • True / False:  Misaligned or improperly attached sights are valid for declaring a rifle defective and refiring a target.
  • Scenario: You are shooting an indoor Smallbore match and your first shot on the target is a sighting shot.  It goes outside of the sighting area.
    • What do you do?
    • Will this shot count as a record shot because it went outside of the sighting area?   (Yes / No)
  • Scenario: You are shooting an indoor Smallbore match and your second shot on the target is a sighting shot.  It goes outside of thesighting area.
    • What do you do?
    • Will this shot count as a record shot because it went outside of the sighting area?   (Yes / No)

Upcoming Items:

  • Next week we will be continuing to shoot our WIRC targets.
    • WIRC Targets will need to be shot by next Tuesday.   If you don't get them done and live in the Metro Detroit area, there's a chance that we might be able to meet up and get them shot at either DSC or OCSC.   This will require advanced notification no later than closing the range next Tuesday so we can get any equipment required.
  • On the weekend of December 3rd we will be traveling to Jackson, MI for a competition against the University of Michigan (These will also count as our December WIRC Targets).
    • The event is being finalized this week so I'll be sending out the formal notification in a few days.
  • I'm planning out another fun shoot that will hopefully be happening on December 6th.
    • Important: This event is dependent on the SDC Range Management approving the targeting that will be used for this event.
      • If we can't get the approval request forms from the SDC Range management and the targeting approved we might need to cancel this event.  Per SDC Rifle Range Rules & the SOP all targeting used at the range must be approved.

Thank you for your attention, and have a great week!

GO HUSKIES!
- Zach
