First Match Starting Soon
October marks the beginning of the intercollegiate rifle season for Michigan Tech. The Competition Rifle Team will be competing against NCAA rifle teams, as well as fellow club teams from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
The first match is the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC). This is a three position match (prone, standing and kneeling) postal match, where teams shoot targets at their home range, and mail them to the official scorer. Michigan Tech will be competing in one WIRC postal match per month until January, and in February, will travel to Michigan State for the championship match. The second October match is the Boilmaker Invitational, hosted by the Purdue Rifle and Pistol club at Purdue University. This match is also three positions, and Tech will again be competing against NCAA rifle teams.
The Competition Rifle Team is very optimistic about the upcoming season. Interest in the rifle sports is particularly high this year, with Tech planning on fielding over ten competitors, both new shooters and returning veterans. With the recent acquisition of two top of the line, Anschutz 8002 air rifles, to complement the team’s supply of 1913 22 caliber smallbore rifles, the Competition Rifle Team hopes to reach new heights this year.
